Doctors are disappearing in rural Western Australia.

  1. Just finished re-reading Merry Go Round in the Sea, set in Geraldton during WW2 and after. For the School Certificate we had a choice of that or Martin Boyd’s Difficult Young Man set in Victoria. Good reads both, but the lives of both writers tell us a lot about postwar Oz – both fled overseas and died there.

    • There’s been several comments latelly at The Daily Sceptic from Brits who spent time here during the 80s-90s and they weren’t flattering. They found a lot of the same narrow minded attitudes that drove writers like Stow and Boys overseas. I thought we’d grown beyond that – maybe we have a long way yet to go.
