Mark Latham continues to surprise – and impress.

Latham has what might be described as a colourful record in politics. He almost qualifies as a party shopper, having been federal leader – and therefore alternative Prime Minister – of the Australian Labor Party. He was briefly a member of the Liberal Democrats (not to be confused with the Liberal Party). Last year he joined up with Pauline Hanson and One Nation.

If he was simply another attention whore like Andrew Wilkie this political bed-hopping would reduce Latham to the status of political joke. But Latham has demonstrated a care for more than his own public profile. He has a genuine concern for the future of Australia and its people.

And he is not afraid to stand up and make a target of himself. He recently made his maiden speech in the Upper House of the New South Wales parliament. In that speech he  condemned the treatment of Israel Folau, a rugby player who expressed his Christian views about gays on Twitter. Those tweets have seen Folau booted from the state team. Latham turned the political correctness game back on the other side:

Mr President, I stand with Israel Folau. In his own private time away from his job playing football, he’s a preacher at his community church and naturally, he quotes the Bible…
Those claiming outrage have fabricated their position solely for the purpose of censorship. This is not an argument about diversity.
The Wallabies have no female players, no disabled, no elderly, no middle aged.
They are selected from a tiny fraction of the young, fit, athletic male population.
By excluding a committed Christian, they are making their game less inclusive.

Latham goes on to play ‘What has Western Civilisation ever done for us?’ and refers to the Minister for Energy as the Minister for Blackouts.

Here’s one politician with the spine and guts to stand against the idiocy of modern times.
