When I woke up this morning, Australia had a Prime Minister who, though not without his flaws, was a man I could respect.
Tonight, as I turn out the lights, Australia has a new Prime Minister. A man driven by ego and self-importance.
This is our new PM.
And this is his history. What were the Liberals thinking when they accepted his membership fee?
Many Australians are unhappy to say the least that Mr Turnbull has won the top spot, aided by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. The vote in the party room went 54 to 44. There will be consequences at the ballot box for those who supported Turnbull. Let them put their names to this treachery. Seize them and unmask them – that we may know whom we have to hang, at sunrise, from the battlements! (Apologies to Edgar Allan Poe.)
Two years ago I was predicting that politics would soon become boring in Canberra.
I wish very deeply that I’d been right.
