Karen Black, 1939-2013.

Karen Black

Karen Black died on August 8 in Los Angeles. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2010.

Her resume at IMDB lists nearly 200 titles. As her obituary in the UK Telegraph describes, she was always willing to take a chance:

While some actresses are highly selective about which roles they will accept, Karen Black demonstrated an entrepreneurial willingness to take parts at which others would turn up their noses. Thus, as big roles started to dry up, she got a second wind as a diva of the low-budget independent film circuit, becoming the only actor in cinema history to have been directed by both Hitchcock and the shock-rocker-turned-horror-director Rob Zombie.

She was Jack Nicholson’s girlfriend in Five Easy Pieces, the simple working girl out of place among the intellectuals around her boyfriend’s family. Karen also appeared in many of the top tv series of the 60s including The FBI, The Big Valley and The Invaders. But most of us remember her best for that nasty encounter with a little black doll…
