Beware of low-flying Kuryakin.

Low flying Kuryakin indexed

There’s one THRUSH minion who won’t be doing evil for a while.

The gif is taken from The Hula Doll Affair, an episode from the legendary third season of The Man From UNCLE. Legend status is not always a mark of esteem; season three is generally considered the worst of UNCLE. After watching Ilya Kuryakin defuse a giant stink bomb mid air and Napoleon Solo dance with a gorilla deep in darkest Africa, I would say it rates among the worst television ever made. The first season’s serious edge was blunted through the second and third. There was some effort to restore that toughness in the fourth season, but the viewers, confused by yet another change in the show’s mood, lost interest. UNCLE got his pink slip.

David McCallum and Robert Vaughn did a lot of their own stuntwork, and I’m pretty sure that that is McCallum taking the leap. Whether it’s McCallum or a stand in, that’s an impressive piece of acrobatics. It would have taken considerable trust on the part of the gunman that he wouldn’t get a kick in the head for real. And McCallum (or whoever) might have broken a leg if he’d come down wrong. He very nearly collides with the desk as he looks over his shoulder.

This scene is (almost) enough to make up for that damn dancing gorilla.

  1. No, that’s not McCallum. It’s Fred Waugh, his stunt double. DMc explained how it was done: he did the run-past and then Fred came back into the screen with the leap.

    • Aha. Well, with McCallum disappearing out of the shot, I knew that a stand in might have taken the jump.

  2. I love this….it’s just funny, going on and on and on….

    • Hypnotic. Yes, I know just what you mean.
