Election 2013: Depending on your point of view, this either makes the picture clearer or murkier.

Yesterday, AWMPE appeared for the first time in her brand new Gravitas Glasses to announce a date for the election.

Seven months seemed rather a long time. One theory was that Jooolya was angling to stop any attempt on her leadership. “They can’t topple me now the date’s all set. It wouldn’t look right.”

Ha. If the polls are on a Titanic style dive come July/August, we’ll see soon enough what looks right.

But today held another surprise for the citizens of The Great South Land. Craig Thomson, former union heavyweight and Parliamentary tear-shedder, has been arrested and faces upward of 150 charges.

So now we have another clue as to the long-distance call on the date. And although he has some rivals for the title, Thomson could be Labor’s greatest liability in the march to September. Not only politically, but also financially.

Fairfax Media last year revealed that NSW Labor had paid almost $350,000 in legal costs relating to Mr Thomson before the MP was suspended from the party in May… It is understood that party officials had been worried that if the ALP had not footed the bills, Mr Thomson could have gone bankrupt, disqualifying him from being an MP and causing a byelection that could imperil the minority Gillard government.

It’s a reasonable bet that Jooolya and The Circus of Ineptitude will find it a long hard haul through to election day with stories like this exploding around them.

  1. I’m now looking forward to what the current investigations reveal with regards to the Gillard /AWU fiasco.
