My social betters are becoming a serious embarrassment.

A few months ago it was Larissa Behrendt, and her ‘sex with a horse’ tweet.

At the time – irony alert! – Ms Behrendt was part of a class action against Andrew Bolt for articles which she felt offended, insulted, humiliated or intimidated her. Maybe the tweet against Bess Price was a mind experiment – an attempt to think like someone who intends to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate. We can’t go around imputing malign motives all the time, can we?

I try hard to make allowances. It’s a challenge. Especially when another of the socially aware set has today tweeted himself into the Klutz Zone.

Julian Burnside, QC, take a bow!

JBQC insisted the paedo reference was not aimed at Tony Abbott and claimed that he thought he was sending the tweet to one person only. Mr Thousands Of Bucks To Represent You In Court also announced that he would henceforth send tweets with his silver tongue instead of his clumsy digits. No, I just made that up.

Perhaps I’m being harsh. But what is it with these people?

Surely it can’t be that hard for them to live up to the standards they set for the rest of us.

  1. I do wonder what goes through their heads when they tweet such things. Still, if you set yourself up as a moral compass then again, by definition you are insane.

    • I’ve thought of them as idiotic and self-obsessed but never insane. However, it fits. And for that I’ve added you to my blogroll.

      • Why, I am honoured. As soon as I can work out WordPress, you can go on my seldom visited blog.

        • Welcome to the family…

  2. Is this fellow somehow related to Kevni?

    • Possibly. I don’t think Burnside is quite the narcissist that Kruddfuhrer is, although he comes close.
Back in 2001, JB and his wife started an organisation offering rooms in their houses to the illegals who took control of the Tampa in what can only be described as an act of piracy. As I recall, Mrs B – or, to give her her proper title, artist Kate Durham – had her picture in a newspaper or two, standing in the spare room she would gladly donate to the unfortunates who told the captain of the Tampa to turn his boat back toward Australia or suffer the consequences. Am I getting long-winded here? Anyway, the self-installed halos didn’t light up as planned. A common response was hey, we have homeless in our own cities; kids sleeping on the streets. What about letting them into your house?
Reminds me of the stories I’ve read about radical chic in the US in the Sixties. Some of us are oppressed, and some of us are fashionably oppressed.

  3. Hi,
I couldn’t believe this when I read it. His excuse, “I thought I was tweeting one on one” this I feel makes him sound even worse, what difference does it make, one person or a thousand people, it was disgusting.

    • It’s a lame excuse, all right. But as Jim Treacher said, the left want the right to shut up, and the right want the left to keep on talking. They have a real gift for tripping over their own hypocrisies.
