William Fichtner and the Indy 500.

I’m not a fan of car racing, but I am a fan of William Fichtner. A great actor, Mr Fichtner  lifts any movie he appears in a few notches above ordinary. And his monologue here, prelude to the Indy 500 in its centenary year, blends the excitement of  the event with a little of its history and traditions.

“Ask any driver,” says Fichtner. “She’s got a say in who wins this thing” – as J R Hildebrand learnt to his sorrow today.   Courtesy of Tim Blair: the final lap of the 2011 Indy 500, and the damnable luck of Hildebrand hitting the wall just seconds away from taking the checkered flag.

Bathurst, Australia’s premier road racing event, has seen its own share of spectacular moments. Here, from 1970, Bill Brown’s crash. Brown survived, giving the term ‘miraculous escape’ a whole new meaning. Thanks to Unique Cars and Parts for the footage.
